Maps (Masego) Maponyane: Talking Social Media, Fashion and Personal

We asked Maps (Masego) Maponyane a few questions to get some insight about Social Media, Online Branding, Fashion and a few personal questions. In this interview we find out a few things we never needed to picture (The last question).

  1. If you had to explain to a granny who doesn’t know who you are or what you do, what would you say?

I would say I’m a TV Presenter and Actor in an effort to keep my answer as least complicated for her as possible.

  1. What is your favourite clothing item that you always travel with, and don’t say your underwear?

My favourite clothing item to travel with is my uniqlo puffer jacket. It’s feather light, takes up very little space, folds into itself, acts as pillow for random naps and it’s warm when you need a jacket that isn’t bulky.

  1. What tips would you give someone to help them build their online brand?

Firstly, just go for it, share all those things that make you tick and that you find interesting or can speak passionately about because people appreciate that. Secondly, be consistent in every way, be it your frequency or in your views or what you stand for, because people appreciate that too. As soon as people have no idea what you’re about, then you’ll just fade into the background with everyone else.

  1. What’s the strangest/grossest DM you have ever gotten?

The strangest DM I’ve gotten has to be, without a doubt, a gentleman that asked me to pay for his fiancée’s lobola as he didn’t expect that price to have been so high. I was very confused as to why I was the person to go to, but he was quite reasonable in that he was willing to pay me back over time.

  1. What do you feel has been the key to your success or your breakthrough?

The key to any success I have had is punctuality on set, reliability of delivering with whatever I’ve been tasked to do, and creating an enjoyable enough environment for everyone involved that it leaves something in them.

  1. How does one keep their Insta-Game on point?

You keep your insta-game on point by putting out whatever is consistent with the person that you are, but also ensuring that the quality of your images is consistently good. You engage with your followers, be it replying to comments or leaving comments on their posts.

Also, keep your messaging as honest and authentic as possible.

  1. Number one Fashion Tip for men that you live by?

Wear it with a smile. Confidence has the ability to almost pull any look off.

  1. Petrol costs are high, data costs are high, everything is high. How do we keep up with latest Fashion trends when Akanamali (I don’t have money)?

Fashion to a large extent needs money, but style really doesn’t. You can find great pieces from anywhere, it’s just about how you style it, modify it in your own way, get it tailored, and match it up with what you have. Be creative and don’t follow the crowd towards what everyone else is doing or wearing, especially if it inhibits the growth of your pocket.

  1. Has anyone slide into your DM and has had success?

Hahaha, yes, agencies or brands that are looking to do some work with me. Otherwise, I avoid the ones with ulterior motives or intentions.

  1. What is your ultimate pet peeve?

Entitlement. You can see that from how people treat those around them. Nobody owes you a damn thing, just be kind.

  1. Bonus Question: What’s the most embarrassing moment you have had in your career?

I’ve had a number of embarrassing moments but the one that comes to mind is blowing my nose during the commercial break of a show I was hosting and then realizing only a few minutes later, whilst having already been on air, that some snot had ricocheted off the tissue and was hanging on my beard.
