10 Netflix Recommendations for South Africa

I’m late to the Netflix and Chill bandwagon but now that I am on it, I AM ADDICTED. After a few posts on Social Media, I realised that so many people don’t know what to watch. It is understandable because there is so much to choose from that one can get lost in the selection or take an hour to choose what to watch. Here are 10 Netflix Recommendations for South Africa. WARNING: You may become addicted to these shows, I know I did.

The Good Place

COMEDY: This genius show plays with the idea of Heaven, Hell and the Afterlife. With an incredible cast, Kristen Bell come on, and an amazing story line filled with plot twists, it is must watch. You have 2 seasons to get through and since the episodes are about 25 mins each, you will binge right through all of them. In a nutshell, the story is about a lady who goes to Heaven but should actually be in Hell.

ACTION: Have you ever seen the cartoon kids show called ‘Teen Titans Go’? Well this is the DC group of heroes that you might know but now in a different light, for an older audience. I’m not fully in love with the actress who plays Raven as I feel her acting skills lack a bit at times but Starfire and Robin are Incredible. This action-filled comic book character filled Netflix original will definitely keep you entertained.

13 Reasons Why

DRAMA: Before you watch this Netflix Original, this is a deep and heart wrenching story that is not for the easily upset or those battling with mental illness. This show deals with bullying, coming of age, depression, teen suicide, rape, and the horrible side of society. It tackles these issues head on but is really beautifully done. Season 1 caused mayhem when it was released and Season 2 is just as good.

Stranger Things

ACTION/ HORROR: Another Netflix Original that is a must MUST must see. I would use 11 ‘must’ words but you may not get the joke. Two Seasons are available to stream but this show was one of the shows that really brought attention to Netflix. This gripping tale will have you at the edge of your seat. Don’t watch at night alone if you are scared of the dark. Season 3 is coming out soon.

Schitts Creek

COMEDY: This Canadian comedy is the most underrated and least spoke about shows ever and it is sacrilege. It is about a Rich family turned poor, I mean we all want to see that. This witty humour filled production is something that South Africans will love. Believe me when I say this, you will fall in love with this Rich Family quicker than you can say ‘Shitts Creek’.

P.S. Yes, the one actor is the same guy as ‘Take my strong hand’ guy from Scary Movie 2.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

HORROR/ DRAMA / COMEDY: A lot of 80’s and 90’s South Africans might remember the show ‘Sabrina, the Teenage Witch’. This is the same show and character but re-imagined in a more modern and darker setting. Although I loved this Netflix original, especially the two Aunts, I did feel that the Satanism theme may offend a few South Africans. At times, the show is really demonic but I enjoyed it and can’t wait for Season 2 coming out soon.

Gaga: Five Foot Two

DOCUMENARY: This Netflix Original follows Lady Gaga around as she creates and releases her album called ‘Joanne’ as well as her Super Bowl performance. This is a great movie if you are or are not a Mother Monster fan as it shows you the real human side of a mega-celebrity.

Sex Education

COMEDY / DRAMA: At first, after the first Episode I didn’t think I would enjoy this Season but now that I’ve streamed all of the Episodes, it has me screaming for more. This show is about a nerdy British kid who starts giving sex advice to his fellow school mates. This show deals with serious issues but is a lekker lag as well.

Fyre Festival Documentary

We all know about Influencer Marketing going wrong but this is a whole different level. Imagine seeing your favourite celebrity talking about the most amazing island festival ever so you buy tickets and arrive on the island only to find out the festival is not happening. This is basically what the Movie is about and it will knock your socks off.

American Meme

DOCUMENARY: Another Netflix Original movie that follows the life of Online Celebrities/ Content Creators and Paris Hilton. It perfectly maps out the life that these individuals live offline and what their jobs actually entail. If anything, watch this show for Brittany Furlan.

10 new recommendations that I feel most South Africans would love. Please do not blame me for becoming glued to your screens while you get through these amazing shows and movies.

This article is not sponsored, I just wanted to share the shows I have watched with my Bananas. If Netflix would like to sponsor me, PLEASE DO SO!  ;D
